Arlington Free Clinic is a nonprofit, community-based organization of volunteers committed to providing low income, uninsured adult residents of Arlington County access to comprehensive health care and full pharmacy services. Last year, the Clinic offered over 6,500 medical visits for a wide variety of vital medical services. An additional 3,500 appointments for procedures such as x-rays and MRIs were also provided.

Support from the Arlington community has been and continues to be vital for the Clinic’s quality and scope of care. Over 500 volunteer doctors, nurses, pharmacists and others are key to the ongoing success and sustainability of the Clinic’s services. Community leaders play active roles on the Clinic’s Board while others serve as Community Advisors. Financial support from individuals and community organizations, including the Arlington Interfaith Council, continues to allow the Clinic to provide high quality health care for thousands of Arlingtonians.

In recent years, the Clinic has been honored for its service. These honors include: in 2005, AFC was among five finalists for The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management; in 2004 AFC was selected as a Catalogue for Philanthropy charity; and in 2002, AFC was one of 20 national recipients of the President’s Community Volunteer Award through the Points of Light Foundation.

Current Programs

· Comprehensive adult medical services, including specialty care, for complex conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma

· Women’s Health, including cervical and breast cancer screening and follow up including mammograms and biopsies and additional treatment as required

· Physical Therapy, provided through a collaboration with Marymount University;

· Behavioral Health, providing individual, family and group counseling in English and Spanish

· Healthy Lifestyles, including diet and nutrition counseling, exercise programs, and educational programs on topics such as osteoporosis

Financial Needs

While the Clinic relies on its cadre of volunteers to provide and support services, coordinated care requires intense case management by Clinic staff to ensure patients receive the care needed. Costs associated with this type of care continue to grow.

Critical Issues

· To regularly provide appointments for new patients, in response to the increasing number of uninsured residents.
