Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia

Report to the Arlington Interfaith Council

Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia has a big year ahead. To respond to the increasing shortage of affordable housing, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Virginia is breaking new ground. Although we continue to family townhouses and single family detached homes when that is available, this year we will be renovating two condominium complexes. Families will become full owners of their condominiums, but by rehabbing condominiums, we are able to serve more families with less land. The first complex is called Westbrook Forest, and it is on Lee Highway in Fairfax. The second complex is called Perry Hall, and it is on 17th Street in Arlington.

Perry Hall will have 12 condominiums, ranging in size from 1 to 4 bedrooms, and a private parking lot. Renovation will involve a complete gutting of the building and a great deal of demolition work. The finished complex will conform to high standards of quality and modest comfort that Habitat remains committed to.

Perry Hall is an expensive project, and we are in need of financial partners to help off set those costs. Donations or discounting of specialized labor for construction or interior finishing, as well as donations or discounting of construction and interior finishing materials (in bulk), will also help offset the expenses of the project.

We remain in critical need of land. Price of land continues to soar, so even when land owners are willing to sell, Habitat is unable to match the high bids offered by for-profit developers. We continue to seek landowners (individuals or organizations) willing to sell at below-market value prices, or who are willing to donate their land.

We also have a specialized fund for land purchases, and we remain in need of financial donations designated for the Land Fund.

We also have need for weekday volunteers at our Alexandria ReStore on Richmond Highway. The ReStore sells new and gently used building materials, appliances, and furniture at steeply discounted prices (50% to 90% below retail). All items for sale are donated, and the store is open Mondays through Saturdays. We rely on volunteers for the day to day operations of the ReStore.

We are seeking new members for our Faith Relations Committee. Committee volunteers attend one committee meeting a month, and take on responsibility for a variety of outreach tasks and special faith events.
