CHAMPS
Child & Adolescent Mentoring
Program & Support Services
What is CHAMPS?
CHAMPS is a program funded by the Department of Health and
Human Services. Its purpose is to promote a healthy transition into adolescence
and adulthood for at least 25 cultural, racial and language minority children
of incarcerated parents in Northern Virginia.
“Mentoring
can broaden your horizons and introduce you to a new world.”
Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Olympic Medalist
Who Can Participate in this Program?
The children who are eligible for acceptance into this
program come from families where one parent or primary caregiver is currently
incarcerated. All of the children will go through a thorough intake and
assessment process to participate in the CHAMPS program.
What Does it Mean to Have a Mentor in this
Program?
The children selected will meet with mentors two hours per
week. In weekly sessions, the mentors help children increase their
self-esteem and improve general functioning. Weekly meetings are
supplemented by group recreational activities and mentee support groups
facilitated by a mentor liaison.
How do I Apply to Enroll A Child?
If you feel that a child may benefit from this program, please contact the CMHS CHAMPS Coordinator at 703-533-3302 ext. 107. If your child meets the requirements, we will set up an appointment for a thorough intake and assessment interview.
