MINUTES OF ARLINGTON INTERFAITH COUNCIL MEETING
AIC COUNCIL MEETING, MARCH 19, 2007
OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC CHURCH, 7:30 P. M.
Fred Jones, president, called the meeting to order. Father Robert Avela has been at this church since last June. Parishes have boundaries, and his has over 1,000 families. Guests were introduced: Brian Spoon with congressman Moran’s office,Davis Jones from St. George’s Episcopal, James Manship from Del Ray Baptist church, Marty Western from Rock Spring congregation, Carrie Lorengetti and Peggy Bergin-Hubbell from the host church.
TREASURER’S report was a handout.
PROGRAM: EDD Nolen introduced DELEGATE ADAM EBBIN 49TH HOUSE DISTRICT. See e-bulletin for the report.
PASSING of Anna L. Borker who helped with many non-profits. Memorial funds can be sent to AFAC in her name.
ASPAN: Lucy Cronin needs the emergency shelter to open year round. The soonest it will open year round would be March 2008. She has petitions to be signed by only Arlington residents. She needs them by April 18th before the county meeting on the 21st. It will take about $100,000 in additional funds to run it. Lori Rinker is retiring with 18 years of service. She will be honored at George Mason University at 3401 N. Fairfax Drive.
CROP WALK was a huge success making over $40,000.
The BREAKFAST with the county board was good. A favorable action was made from the county board for "CLARENDON VIEWS."
COMMUNICATION AND PUBLICITY: David Broder is preparing hard copies of the e-bulletin for those to don’t have access to e-mail. A larger semi-annual FOCUS is planned in the future. David would like to form a committee to help him plan this. Any volunteers?
. MEMBERSHIP: Phil Traina is working on expanding our membership by explaining our program and inviting them to join. He needs someone to help with record keeping. Letters need to be written to each church and record their response. Each congregation will be visited. James Manship volunteered to help with the letters.
REGISTRATION: Gay Mount will have an update to the directory at the April meeting.
SHELTER AND HOUSING: Ellen Bartlett thanked the AIC for the support of the Clarendon View. The deadline to file an appeal on the decision is March 26th.
Ellen had a handout for Buckingham. The original plan was to demolish all 456 units. We stopped Villiage I, and III from being torn down. Affordable housing week is April 21-28th.
AHS: 2nd annual housing forum on Saturday, April 28th, 8:30 A. M. registration, 9:00 A. M. -12:00 P. M.
COUNTY BUDGET MEETING: March 27th, Rob Warne, past president, will testify at the county board. county board. The 29th will be on the tax rate.
VIRGINIA INTERFAITH COUNCIL FOR PUBLIC POLICY: Bob Bayer needs churches to join this group. AIC is already a member. Human services has taken a big hit by losing LCAP funds. Rob Warne suggested a letter be sent to them.
APRIL 16TH AIC MEETING AT MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH AT 7:15 P. M. beginning with refreshments.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Blackburn’s Unitarian church will have held a meeting on March 31st on restorative justice. Nancy Cude gave out passes for
(1)AFAC to get 5% back on your order at WHOLE FOODS in Clarendon on April 4th.
(2) They will need help onthe’’DECONSTRUCTION" on Sunday, April 15th at 8:45 A. M. at Ballston. All cans used will go to AFAC. This has become the second largest food collection for the organization. To vote on the best display, take a can before the 15th. There are 14 different structures.
(3) May 12th is the letter carriers food collection. Help is needed at Nelson Street.
Women’sClub of Arlington: Elizabeth Duvall reported that they are doing an update on Al Gore’s program on global warming. God and Country Foundation:
James Manship got down on his knees and grave a closing prayer from George Washington when he was only 20 years old, followed by the Lord’s prayer.
Neota Hall reported that the costs for filing for a green card has risen.
