Meals on Wheels: Urgent Need for Volunteers
Meals on Wheels is seeking additional volunteers from
Arlington Interfaith Council congregations. We
already have over 31 congregations in our pool of
volunteers, yet we still have routes to fill. AIC
congregations have been the main support of Meals on
Wheels since its beginning. We have delivery
commitments that are monthly or some that only require
service eight times each year.
We are in immediate need of congregations to volunteer
to be scheduled on fifth weeks of the month
Wednesday/Friday or Tuesday/Thursday rotations.
Meals on Wheels of Northern Virginia, an all volunteer
operation, has delivered meals to homebound neighbors
for over 30 years. Each day Meals on Wheels of
Northern Virginia makes it possible for over 150
elderly or disabled people to live independently, with
dignity, in their own home. I can help you organize
your team with one volunteer coordinator from your
congregation.
Delivering meals is a simple and rewarding way to
spend one extended lunch hour per month. Volunteers
deliver meals to the homebound between 11:00 a.m. and
12:30 p.m.. Schedules are somewhat flexible so
people can be scheduled to help whenever they are
available. Each volunteer team is scheduled only once
per month. We dispatch drivers with meals from the
Ballston area. Our delivery program operates in the
parking lot of First Presbyterian Church (across from
the Ballston Commons Mall) each Monday through Friday.
Directions, maps and food are provided when the
driver arrives at the First Presbyterian Church
parking lot. This is a well organized opportunity for
the volunteer teams.
